Analysis Of The Banning Of The Catcher In The Rye
J. D. Salingerââ¬â¢s The Catcher in the Rye, is one of the most controversial books ever written. The book has been banned in many places, while at the same time being viewed as an American classic. There is a great deal of controversy on banning the book in schools across America, due to itââ¬â¢s content. The story follows a mentally ill teen, Holden Caulfield, delving into his thoughts and feelings. The Catcher in the Rye should be banned for its many controversial views and topics, including the use of vulgar language, illegal activities, itââ¬â¢s association with assassinations and its suicidal content. The Catcher in the Rye should be banned for its overuse of vulgar language. After his meeting with Luce in chapter nineteen, he states, ââ¬Å"I kept sitting there getting drunkâ⬠(Salinger 165). This illegal content sets poor example on impressionable teens. Smoking is a go to for Holden as well; whenever Holden is in an uncomfortable situation he automatically reaches for a cigarette. Once again Holden is also under the legal smoking age. The novel takes place over three days and within that time period Holden smokes well over a pack of cigarettes. ââ¬Å"Finally, I got up and went out in the living room and got some cigarettes out of the box on the table and stuck some in my pocket. I was all out (Salinger 183). This once again glorifies illegal activity in the novel and sets a bad example. Prostitution is also present in the novel. In chapter thirteen Holden feels lonelier than usual, so he hires a prostitute. This proves that sex is prevalent throughout the novel. Holden even calls himself ââ¬Å"the biggest sex maniac you ever sawâ⬠(Salinger 70). The inappropriateness of this subject is another reason teens should not be able to read this novel. Main Post According to the Walden Writing Center (2014), reading is where the writing process begins. There are five strategies for critical reading. (1) Read with a purpose. What do you already know? What do you want to know? What are you learning? (2) Read strategically. (3) Note and trust your questions about the reading. Highlight sections that are confusing. (4) Back away and summarize what you have read. Take notes as you read. Summarize paragraphs in one word. Highlight to bring out ideas and combine with the one word. (5) Mark up your document. [5] Our resources this week point out that when we read for a purpose, we retain more information. It is suggested to make a note of what you already know about the subject you are reading. When I am reading for research, I try to get meaning out of every sentence. In the back of my mind I ask myself what the author is saying and why is it important. The Walden Writing Center suggest that articles can be skimmed. However, I do not believe that. I feel that every word has a meaning and a point. I believe that is a big area where I need improvement. There are times when I read sections that I know about like the back of my hand, yet Iââ¬â¢ll still read it word for word. One of my professors from my masterââ¬â¢s program warned me that I would get to a point to where my type of reading will not be feasible especially when I have several assigned readings at the same time. He suggested that if I know, the particular material just skim over it as a refresher. Iââ¬â¢m starting to see w hat he meant. To improve in this area, I started trying to focus on parts of the reading I do not know and skim over sections that are familiar to me. At the event of military take over of the church in Aguilares, he sacrifices himself by going into the church that was taken over by military force. So later he lets him to sacrifices himself and shows more interest to other things around him by being active and speaking more about his thoughts. 11.What does the Church in Aquilares (the church being held by the military) mean to Romero? Why was it important for Romero to risk his life and try to save the Eucharist reserved in the tabernacle? Why does he test fate and go back into the church and say mass?The Church in Aguilares was somehow related to Fr. Grande, who was his special friend. The night before Fr. Grande was assassinated, he gave a speech and led the prayer in front of the Church of Aguilares. Since the church symbolized Fr. Grande, Romero wanted to protect the presence of the God and the soul of Fr. Grande by protecting the church. There are sev eral reasons why he risked his life to save the Eucharist in the tabernacle. First, he is the highest of all Christian leaders in El Salvador. If he did not show this sacrifice, the military will look Christians as weak and not brave people. Then they will take more advantage of it. Second, he no longer wants to summit to military force. He also could have been extremely upset at the fact that they are using a holy place as their military barrack. One of the leaders of the military force in the church shot at the tabernacle, which destroyed and ruined the Eucharist. This violence was extreme and violated the beliefs of Christians. It is not a producible article nor is it an action. It is an aspect that takes place. This implies that a person cannot make a revolution, but one can lead to or provoke a revolution. Individuals, nations, or groups that commence a path that leads to a rebellion are usually ones who have tasted the bitterness of oppression or the acidity of existing as the minority. A revolution is a change. A change does not have to be to a positive state. Therefore, a revolution could lead to an inferior negative situation. In this case the one behind that particular negative revolution probably looks at the aspect through another window from which he sees the inferior cause as a superior one. The question mostly inquired is: does the revolution introduce and stimulate the individual or does the individual introduce the revolution? I find this specific question to be coming from a source of skepticism and of underestimation to the potency of individuality.
